september charity: my mom's pick!

for this month's donation, i asked my mom if she had any particular charities she wanted me to support. (she doesn't read the blog- which is for the best! - but knows i have one, and about my year of charity project.) as i've mentioned here before, my mom is a restaurant reviewer and a food writer, as well as founding member of the nj chapter of slow food and a judge for the james beard awards. so it's no surprise her charity pick was food related: the farm to school program.

this organization works with schools to improve the quality and nutrition of school lunches by incorporating more locally sourced produce on the menus.

to help support food to farm, you can donate here to the community food security coalition. or you can find your local food to farm program using this map to get involved locally.

speaking of my foodie mom, i need your (local) help! her birthday is in a week and a half, and to celebrate she's coming down to DC and we were going to go out to roberto donna's newest galileo incarnation... but it may not actually open in time. any recommendations for a restaurant reviewer / food writer who's already been to komi, citronelle, and restaurant eve (and who couldn't get into minibar)?

  1. This is an awesome charity choice. As far as DC restaurants, I really like Dino in Cleveland Park (their squid ink risotto is to die for), but I am intimidated by your mom's restaurant cred and have no idea if she would like it and/or if it's the kind of place you are even looking for. But: yum.

  2. That's so cool what your mom does for a living!

I've heard of that charity before. I believe a contestant on Top Chef Masters supports it too.

  3. I'd say Nora's because I think that's a nice spot to take a parent but like Jess, I'm totally intimidated by your mom's foodie background and therefore am too scared to recommend Nora's for real.

  6. What a great program to support. Love it! Wish I could offer advice on places to eat in DC, but if I did, I'd probably just direct you to the cafeteria at the Air & Space Museum, as that's where I ate many a meal as a kid visiting her grandparents. =)

  8. Also a little intimidated, but what about one of the Ethiopian places - Etete, maybe? Or I also really like Mie 'n' Yu in Georgetown, but it can get a bit loud.

  9. Schools definitely need better food and nutrition. Great cause!

Unfortunately I can't give you any advice on where to go in DC because I actually depend on you for that! ;)
