the fruits of my labor

so this is what i was doing yesterday:we caught the maximum amount of rockfish allowed (i'm not sure if it's by law, or by the-first-mate-doesn't-want-to-have-to-clean-more-than-this): 2 fish per person. that means i came home with four very fresh filets:

i just made these for dinner, and i'm pretty sure i'm in love. i've eaten at a LOT of really good restaurants in my day - my mom's a restaurant reviewer, let's not forget - and i swear to you, this fish was some of the best i've had.

i went nice and simple: i patted the filets with a bit of flour, then dusted them with a mixture of oregano, parsley, black pepper, and garlic salt.
i tossed those into a hot pan of olive oil with a wee splash of white bordeaux. i seared them for... i'm not sure, probably 4 minutes on the skin side, then 3 minutes on the other side? ish? i threw some capers into the pan when i turned the filets over, and squirted some lemon juice on them then too, since i'd forgotten to cut and/or use the lemon until that point.

they were maybe just the weeeeee-est bit undercooked, but with fish this fresh i don't really mind.* and i hate overcooked fish.
amazing. seriously. i now understand why people fish, if it regularly provides these results.

in other news, i wish more places i frequented had "boat parking available."

*as if i've EVER had fish this fresh before?? this was my very first time fishing, for f's sake.

  1. Looks delish!! I've had fresh salmon (we pulled up next to a fishing boat in Alaska while on another boat) and same trip, the first mate caught a 90-lb halibut. We had some AWESOME beer battered halibut that night. *sigh*
Any time it is that fresh, it would be hard for it to be bad, and you certainly didn't harm it any with your recipe! YUMMO!!

    PS: Reserve July 10th.

  5. Awesome. It's just past midnight and I'm hungry again.

So then you suggest just fishing for food?

  12. Wow. I haven't been fishing in years. I can't even remember if I was any good... which is absolutely a way of saying I obviously wasn't. But I loved eating what someone else caught.

Hopefully, we're going fishing with my folks in the next month or so. I love fishing!

  14. Looks like you caught a good sized one! I've only ever caught one fish before, and it was too wee to keep. I've never been ocean fishing before, either.

  15. I've never even heard of rockfish. Sounds like something from The Flintstones.

  17. Your mom is a restaurant reviewer? That is a friend of mine's dream job. So did you consult your mom for advice on preparing that fish, or was that genius all your own? Either way, well done!

  18. You are far more brave than I. I was born without the Fishing Gene - so I just can't get my mind wrapped around it.

    I like to eat fish.
But I don't think I'll ever cook it.

    Cute bathing suit, though!

  20. I never caught any fish when I go fishing with my dad, he usually gets a lot though. Maybe that's why I always get lazy if someone asks me to go.

  21. did you scale the fish and all the cutting and all that? you did? Brave, you are very brave

  22. I don't know...I think there is a certain amount of "this tastes better because I caught/grew/shot it" to something that comes with something like this.

Also, that does look tasty. Too bad I'm the only one in my family who will eat fish. Well, except for the occasional fish stix, but we all know that's not the same thing.
