push up, push up real good

hello everyone! i'm still in a surprisingly good mood from the weekend, which is even more impressive seeing as i started out this week with my annual visit to the ladyparts doctor, which is SUCH A FUN WAY to wake up on a monday morning, wouldn't you agree?

(aside: i didn't think the paper gown situation could get more awkward / demeaning than it already was, considering it was a PAPER GOWN that opens in the front and all, but i was wrong! today's ensemble was the normal paper gown, open in front, and the paper.. sheet, i guess, to go over my knees, just like normal. or so i thought. turns out i no longer get a paper gown; i get a paper.. how to put this... bolero jacket. a cropped, open-front, paper vest, basically. and a piece of tissue paper to go over my knees. yowza.)

ANYWAY. sunday continued to be nearly as delightful as saturday, and even involved a thorough (and much needed) cleansing of my bathroom, bedroom, and kitchen, as well as the completion of 90% of my laundry. i have NO IDEA what inspired this sudden burst of productivity this weekend, but it was quite the pleasant surprise.

so today marks day 1 of my 100 push up challenge, which i have decided to do for no particular reason other than i think it would be pretty cool to have upper body strength for a change. several people have warned me that it's pretty unlikely that i will want the upper body of someone who can do 100 push ups, which is a good point.... except that my body is so hilariously resistant to building muscle mass that i'm not actually too worried. even when i AM strong and muscular, i really, really don't LOOK strong and muscular. my body doesn't believe in muscle definition. or large biceps. AS FAR AS I KNOW, anyway. i reserve the right to quit partway through the 6 weeks if a) i start not fitting into my clothes due to how hugely muscular i become, b) i start scaring men with my veiny arms, or c) ok, i actually can't think of anything else. i was going to put something about being able to bounce my pec muscles independently, like dudes who lift a lot, except i actually think that would be AWESOME AND HILARIOUS and just about the BEST PARTY TRICK EVER, so i'm secretly hoping that does happen.

anyway. day one of 100 push ups: completed. i'm starting at level one, so i did four rounds of 2 push ups each this morning, plus the final "max out" round where i did 5. my friend silvia (who seriously needs a blog... i think i'm 75% of the way to convincing her to start one, right silvia?) is doing it with me, so we'll be push up queens together. or will both quit halfway through when we start having manly upper bodies, whichever comes first.

  1. Okay, I know I should just CLICK THE LINK, or whatever, but are these full, military-style pushups? Cuz lots of girls can't even do ONE of those.

    So, YAY!

  2. I have an appointment with the lady doctor this week too. Ugh! It's never fun is it?

Good for you and doing push ups!! I think the regular push ups also work out the whole body, not only upper so don't worry, you won't look like Rambo from the top. ;)

  4. I'm in! I might have to do the knee ones, because I've never been able to do many pushups (read: never could do more than a couple)...But then again, I never used to be able to run 1/4 mile. Thanks for telling us about this!

  5. I printed out the whole hundred pushups program a couple weeks ago. I INTEND to start it at some point in the near future, that point being the same point that I start actually dragging my ass out of bed at 5am to workout. I TRIED to do that this morning, but hit snooze two times instead, then gave up and just shut off the alarm and slept until 7:30.

  8. Or if you move to NY, you could do push ups IN Queens. Ugh...sorry.

As for the paper gown, you should know by now that lady part doctor fashions change from year to year and doctor's need to keep up.

  13. Is the 100 pushup thing this year's version of the Couch to 5K? Because I'm pretty sure I won't be getting on board with this one. Still, I look forward to seeing you bounce your pec muscles independently one day.

  14. Dude, I am loving the 100 pushups challenge! I feel so bad-ass doing it. (Although Week 3 is a BITCH. I had to repeat day one, week 3 THREE times before I mastered it.)

My goal is to be able to do 100 pushups, join the snootiest gym around, walk into the center of the room where all the beefy guys hang out, do my 100 pushups, leave, and walk to the nearest Buffalo Wild Wings to celebrate.
