chicago: plan my trip for me!

so! chicago is officially booked as of about 20 minutes ago. we're getting in at 11am on saturday morning, then have until noon on monday to galavant around the city as we wish before the conference starts and i have to buckle down and concentrate on 800-ish powerpoint presos.

what i need from you: suggestions of where to eat, what to do, where to go, what to see, you name it.

and! if you're local to chicago, also tell me when you're free, so i can come and talk animatedly at you and scare you off with my excessive hand/arm flailing while telling stories. (sounds fun, no? i suggest doing this someplace with alcohol, for your sake.)

aaaaaand go!

  1. I already told you about the restaurants: Japonais! And May Street Market! OMG yummy!

Also, we spent a day doing a long, looping walk--from Armitage east to Lincoln Park, then down along the lake to the Magnificent Mile. It's fun.

Oh and the Navy Pier has a Ferris Wheel that is a kiddie tourist attraction, but I love Ferris Wheels so for me it's totally worth it.

  2. Girrrrrrl, you know we're getting together when we're in town. I'll email you my list of suggestions. And we can figure out where I fit into your gallivanting weekend. Summer is THE BEST time to be here - so get your party hat on!

  3. Wish I could say where you should go but last time I was in Chicago I was 4 I think. So you see, I don't remember much. But have an awesome time!!!! You totally deserve it!!

  4. But the Navy pier is WAY EXPENSIVE to park at, so be sure to either walk or take transit.

I loved the planetarium and OMG, The Natural History Museum. Eh, skip the aquarium.

  5. Have to admit that I'm very jealous of the fact that you get to meet up with people you only know from blogs. I wish I could meet up with you. It would be nice to see what you're like in real life - the wild hand movements.

  6. Erm...I've only been to the areas around Chicago but if you need a place to eat in Elgin, St. Charles, or Itasca then I'm your man.

But let's hope it doesn't come to that.

  8. I moved from Chicago 14 years ago so my info is a bit out of date, but Miller's Pub on Wabash in the Loop is no doubt still the best bar in town...

  11. I'm here and available all that weekend. Milk and Honey Cafe is good. Kingston Mines is a fun place too, but noisy. Bin 36 is a great wine bar...

  13. Oops. Sorry, forgot to go anon on that. Though it called me "email." Odd.

    Anyway, here it is again:

Never been there, but doesn't Flibberty live there? I bet she and Brett would be fun to meet in person.

  14. This is the first time I've been here but yay Chicago!

  16. I may have already said this, but Millennium Park is one of my favorite places in Chicago. I definitely recommend it.

Also! I'll be available in the evenings. I'm having a garage sale during the day but should be done by 5. Yay!

  17. ALICE!!!! I am sorry I am late, I haven't been a good reader and freaked out because I thought you were here in Chicago like NOW. And that I already MISSED you. And that would make me sad. But July?? I can DO July!!! I noticed you didn't list me and I'm sure that is because I am a bad slacker of a blogger and not because you don't love me anymore, right...? Sending you an e-mail now!

  18. OH - I lived in Chicago for years. Seriously, email me at lambira@gmail.com and tell me the things you like to do.

Art Institute is a MUST and it backs up to Millennium park, which many other commenters mentioned.

If you can catch a Cubs game, they are really fun. Grab a beer in Hi-Tops Cafe (neighborhood by third base) and you'll see where I met my husband back in the day.

Great free zoo - Lincoln park Zoo- and you can hit North Avenue beach for some sun and volleyball...

Restaurants - Hmm.. you have to tell me what you like, but again I have a HUGE range from cheap and cheerful to pricy but magnificent.

    OH, I am so jealous.
