happy anniversary, me!

this weekend was my 1-year anniversary with theboyfriend, matt. this is a fairly big deal for me, since i have made it to a year dating the same person exactly zero times in the past. so! go me!

to celebrate, i decided to make fake sushi, which i originally saw
here on not martha's website. how cute is that? i made a test run at my new house a few nights ago, and charmed the heck out of my new roommates in the process, since they all thought the candy sushi was equal parts adorable and fabulously cool. go me again!

i decided fake sushi was appropriate (although now that i've made it once, i have to say.. when is fake sushi NOT appropriate? the answer: NEVER.) because matt and i have a History Of Sushi together. our very first date, many moons ago, was at a fun sushi place in arlington where he valiantly tried sushi for the first time. he ended up loving it, and we eat sushi alll the time now. last christmas, i gave him a dinner at a fancypants sushi place in dc (SO GOOD, by the way) so i decided to keep up the sushi theme for the anniversary dinner.

i find twinkies to be pretty foul, which is what the not martha gal used primarily for the "rice" part of the sushi. instead, i saw another site which used rice krispy treats as the rice, and rolled gummi worms in the rice krispy treats to create a roll, and i liked that idea a lot, so i used the treats to create little mounds of rice for the swedish fish versions, too, and only made a few twinkie rolls. the "seaweed" is mostly green fruit roll ups, although i ran out and used these green & red airhead roll things that pulled apart for the seaweed on the plate with just swedish fish. the "roe" are jujubes. voila:

i was amused, and although they're perhaps not the tastiest combination of sweets on earth, they're not too bad. fake raw fish.. how romantic :-)

  1. Congratulations! And Yum! I would totally lik the rice krispies version better -- I have an almost unhealthy love for those things. Paired with gummi worms, well, it just doesn't get better.

  6. Yay for making it a year! It's a big milestone! The sushi looks so cool, and I have to agree rice krispies sounds way better than twinkies. and it's more authentic too.

I *love* this candy sushi idea. It's so colorful and creative!! Very nice indeed. I think I'd prefer the rice krispie version vs the twinkie one as well.
