hair woes

so the other day, i was perusing Style Lush and came across a post about creating gorgeous no heat curls. sounds fabulous, right? and easy! even i can manage to wrangle my hair into a style that only requires SLEEPING on it, no?

please click through to the Style Lush link, because you really need the visual of the resulting curls at this juncture. go ahead. i'll wait here.

(seriously. take a looksie.)

can you guess where this is going?

let's just say that despite the tips for thin-haired girls that are sprinkled throughout the video tutorial, this is NOT a style for thin-haired girls to attempt. those lovely soft curls, it turns out, are a result of the hair wrapping not just around the headband, but around ITSELF, which creates a nice thick barrel curl. my hair? with its practically negative mass? yeah... every. single. wrap. around the headband was essentially only the width of the headband itself, since my hair is so thin.

which means that instead of curling my hair, i basically CRIMPED my hair. except in a spiral.

this is after brushing the "curls" out about 30 times, as well as 2 hours pulled back into a ponytail because.. no.

oh cell phone photo. where is the rest of you?

instead of gorgeous no heat curls, i gave myself a gorgeous no heat PERM. awesome.

  1. AAAAAAHHHH HAHAHAHHAAA I HATE those tutorials that make hair stuff seem so easy. Once I read one about putting your hair into a wet braid and sleeping in it to achieve 'beach waves'.

Yeah, it came out crimped. Not cute.

  2. Is it bad that I'm laughing? That is really funny! Us poor straight-haired girls. I know mine would come out just like yours (and it makes me kind of want to try it!).

  5. Oh dear...

This reminds of me of hair styles that SAY they are for "thick" hair and then *I* try it and have to figure out they must mean, "OH, not THAT thick" hair.

  6. Oh no! And it looks like you tried this on a day you had to work, so there was no time for a fix! So sad.

  7. On the plus side- you snuck in a stealth boob shot in that first photo, so everything isn't totally terrible ;-)

  8. HAHAHHA - sorry, but your expression makes that 1st photo!

I'm disappointed because we are hair twins and I was excited to try this. But now I know my hair will do the same thing are yours. Sigh.

Have you ever tried the "add mousse to damp hair and use your fingers to scrunch hair as you blowdry method"? If I really concentrate instead of zoning out like I usually do, I can get some soft-looking waves that make my hair look like it actually has body for once.

I'm sorry, I'm still laughing about this.

  10. I want to punch anyone who insists I need to sleep on curlers to get great curls.

Nothing - not EVEN great curls - is fucking worth a night of curlers. I might as well sleep on rocks.

  11. But, PS, your pictures are hilarious. And at least you can wash that perm away.

  12. I can't say I've ever had a tutorial trial turn out how it was supposed to. It's like they use some kind o magic that they conveniently leave out of the instruction steps.

Hey, at least you know how to do your hair if you score a spot as an extra for a film set in the early 90s.

  13. Ah yes, the ole "easy tutorial for girls with thin hair" by people who do NOT have thin hair. I just want to grab them by the shoulders and say look, I know how this is going to turn out and I already rocked that look in fourth grade. It wasn't good then and it won't be good now. Soft waves my ass. I feel for you!

  14. I went to cosmo school and I still can not fix my own hair which is also very thin and just hates me. I have given up trying and just try to get cuts that are at least mildly flattering so I don't have to try to make my hair look decent. That doesn't work, but it's what I do.

  15. Have I ever mentioned how much I adore you?

  16. I saw that too and tried it. I have super straight but fairly thick hair, and I thought it came out looking really cute. My husband (he with his brutal honesty) told me it looked like a hot mess. I should just finally accept that my hair will never ever be curly and move on.
