two weeks ago was my first! race! ever! and i managed to make it memorable by basically wanting to die for the entire time i was there. it was an absolutely GORGEOUS day, perfect for being outside in a sundress, but i had made some very poor decisions the evening beforehand which involved following up unholy amounts of tequila with effing carbombs (YES! MORE THAN ONE!) and that, shockingly, did not bode well for my overall health or willingness to survive the next day.
so while i tried hard to rally and enjoy the sun...
..i started wilting, fast.
shortly after that picture, i ended up lying down with my hat over my face, in the wee bit of shade provided by my friend alyssa, trying not to get heatstroke. it was.. well.. "pathetic" is probably the best way to describe it.
but! we were RIGHT UP next to the horses, which was pretty neat to see.
then this past weekend, we headed down to charlottesville for foxfield. it's right next to UVA, so it draws a LOT of current and former wahoos, all of whom dress up to the preppy nines. have you ever wondered what the pinnacle of preppiness looks like? please to let me enlighten you:
PEGGED. KHAKIS. WITH ARGYLE SOCKS.
i basically gave up at this point, since it was pastels and bowties every way i turned, and i would have used up my entire 2GB memory card if i tried to document it all. (the full dose of preppy can be found here.)
as you can tell from the pictures, it was a mostly gray and overcast day, which was too bad. i wish i could have matched up my willingness to not commit suicide at a horse race with the lovely sunny day, but alas. such is life.
i thought a big hat would be enough to preppify me. HA HA HA no. pls send jcrew catalogue, stat.
Hoo boy, I do not handle preppy well. You kick ass.
ReplyDeleteso. many. popped. collars. cannot. form. coherent. thought.
ReplyDeleteps: how cute are you in your big hat? very cute!
It's like being in an episode of Gossip Girl!
ReplyDeleteI'm not even mad, 17-popped-collars dude.
ReplyDelete...I'm just impressed.
as if one popped collar isn't tragic enough...
ReplyDeleteHey Alice! HAHA - you know I had to run over and comment - that is serious prepster overload, and you know I do preppy all the time (proud of it, no haters please)!! You look so pretty, love your dresses.
ReplyDeleteHere is what I have heard about Foxfield, below - sounds like you had a good time, glad you got to experience it! :)
"Few things are more beautiful than a sunny day in Charlottesville in the spring time. The temperature is just warm enough for you to feel the heat, but the notorious summer humidity is still a few months away. The dogwoods are in their majestic pink and white blooms. The daffodils couldn’t be a more perfect yellow. And the folks living here gleefully shake off the long winter season with whatever outdoor activity they can find. There’s a gaiety to the air that’s infectious. And down off Garth Road on the last Saturday every April there’s a type of gaiety and cheer that can only come from 12oz cans and horse racing. The Fox Field Races are a C-ville tradition where the county’s blue-bloods picnic lavishly on the outer rim while UVA students drink themselves into a hilarious (if not dangerous) stupor. On the outfield it’s a white-collar picnic; on the infield it’s the most savage frat party you’ve ever seen in a field. Never mind the sundresses, bow ties, seersucker jackets and enough JCrew to barely stomach…" - The American Festivals Project
OH my goodness. How can that dude even wear that many shirts?! I am speechless.
ReplyDeleteSo...many...collars. Does not compute. How is he not dying wearing that many shirts?
ReplyDeleteDid he just sew on those collars? Like how Judge Judy has a doily collar?
ReplyDeleteUm, I hate being this person but I guess I am this person.
ReplyDeletePreakness is Maryland.
As a Marylander, this is one thing I'm pretty clear on.
Thank you for letting me be that horribly nit-picky person.
LOVED the multi-popped look. I'm thinking he HAD to be in on the joke.
There is nothing not awesome about this whole situation. Beautiful horses, awesome male fashion, big hats, yes all around.
ReplyDeleteGood god that was a lot of preppy! Did you find a hottie named Biff?
ReplyDeleteSo, can I just say how I love this post?? Booze wrapped in J Crew... it looks like my high school class reunion! As I said before, I think the popped collar dude is just trying to match his madras shorts. You think those come in a 5T? Elliott could pull off that look, like, for sure.
ReplyDelete1. You're super cute in that hat!
ReplyDelete2. Do you think that guy washes all those shirts, or just the bottom 2 and the top one? Like the ones that got sweaty and outside debris on them? I have to imagine he does, no, sends out a lot of laundry.
You are freakin' adorable in that hat!
ReplyDeleteThat first preppy guy picture? Frightening.
Farm tour here in 2 more weeks. C'mon out and go winery hopping!

ReplyDeleteThis looks like fun! Love the black hat =) Usually the only race I pay attention to is the Kentucky Derby, but since I'm in DC now I guess I better keep an eye on VA races.

I wonder if that guy is playing strip poker later and needed THAT many collared shirts because he absolutely SUCKS at poker. hahaha.
ReplyDeleteAww...you look adorable!
ReplyDeleteBut you look so cute! And so does your boy! And HOW MANY SHIRTS IS THAT DUDE WEARING? Why didn't HE end up with heatstroke?!
ReplyDeleteOh, the South, I will never understand you.
Hey girl - back to tell you I featured collar boy in my post today, I just had to, it was perfect :)
ReplyDeleteYou look awesome in that hat! (Stay away from the preppy clothes!)
ReplyDeleteAnd the many shirt guy? He must be like 2" thick under there.
There was a guy with a billion popped collars?
ReplyDeleteMind blowing.
That collared guy sure brings new meaning to the term "layering."
ReplyDeleteThat hat looks great on you. :-)
How hot did collared guy have to be - seriously?
ReplyDeleteAlso, where did you get your top? I LOVE IT.
That looks like so much fun! I had a couple friends at Foxfield, too, and the pictures are phenomenal. You can't not laugh at so many popped collars.
ReplyDeleteI've never been to a horserace but in my opinion (and given my horsey background) I've always thought it would be the perfect way to spend the day.
ReplyDeletePS love the hat on you!
