i love the caribbean. a lot. even though it's really a terrible place for me - i burn really, really easily; my body doesn't do well with a lot of direct sunlight or heat (seriously, i do things like pass out randomly when i get overheated) - but still go there whenever i can. because dude. it's AWESOME there.
i've done a decent amount of travelling by myself, but this is the first time i've gone tropical on my own. (um, ok, that's not technically true. remind me to tell you about my first trip to st. maarten some time. it's quite a story.) the last time i went to the DR was with my lovely friend liz, and we ended up meeting an adorable young english couple, as well as a group of english boys, and we all made friends and hung out together all week.
i was sort of hoping for that type of happy coincidence again this time, but no real opportunities presented themselves, so i actually did spend nearly the entire time lying by the pool and/or ocean, reading. and taking breaks to swim up to the bar for a fresh pina colada. it was DELIGHTFUL.
(the books ended up being perfect, as it turns out - the Labyrinth book was a really fun read; the thriller, Invisible, was completely status quo [eg, mindless and perfect], and the Good German was REALLY REALLY great. excellently written, very compelling story. highly recommended.)
the resort was... okay. i've been to a lot of cheap resorts in the caribbean before, and i'm not really very picky - i mean, i'm going there for the sun and the water and the drinks, not the quality of the bedding - but this one was shabbier than even i have come to expect. but honestly. does it even matter? i was HERE:
i'm not going to complain too much about crappy showers when this is the flip side, you know?
the resort had these neat little raised platforms out in the shallow water, with little mattresses on them, so you could wade out a bit and hop on the platform and lie on top of the water. mostly it was, um, Romantical Couples doing this, but psh. whatever. i'm romantical.
(like the chin there, by the way? it actually looks pretty good now, as the scab came off while i was down there. not looking so hot is my shoulder, which caused a hilarious number of double- and triple-takes from people down there, along with eleventybillion concerned inquiries of "que pasó????" from everyone i encountered. i really should have looked up how to say "er.. i fell.." sheepishly in spanish, because my rudimentary grasp of the language definitely didn't cover that phrase. and THIS is what it looks like after 3 days of healing chlorine and salt water - which is to say, BETTER than it looked when i got there:
it's purdy.)
UM. ANYWAY. this was supposed to be about gorgeous caribbean scenes, not gory flesh wounds. my bad. bottom line: you should totally go the caribbean sometime soon. it's wonderful. i feel a hundred times better.
Jack was seriously impressed by your scars and wicked glad to meet you. Just so ya know. ;)
ReplyDeleteBeautiful pictures! I'm glad you had fun!
ReplyDeletemy god, Alice, your shoulder looks so painful!!
ReplyDeleteglad you had a nice time :)
I so want to go there. Now is good.
ReplyDeletealice! looks like you had such a relaxing time! i'm definitely going to the carib in july now!!
ReplyDeleteWelcome back, hon. Glad to see the time away did you well (though I could've done without that flesh eating wound shot of your shoulder! ha!).
ReplyDeleteSo glad you had fun!
ReplyDeleteLooks like you had a great time! Glad to see that you are refreshed and healing, even if it is slowly...
ReplyDeleteI just love that you were woman enough to vacation alone and enjoy it. Not something everyone can do, but it is impressive. As are your war wounds - ouch!
ReplyDeleteI am completely green with envy. I have never been tropical...other than Key Largo, once.
ReplyDeleteGlad you are back, glad you had fun!
That first picture, the one on top? I climbed right into its beautiful blue scene. (I'll probably be back to visit it often.)
ReplyDeleteYour shoulder looks painfully icky. To think I was whining to myself about stiff foot muscles today!
Welcome back! Isn't it nice to come home to sunny weather?
Great pics, looks like you had a great trip. Also, glad to see you're healing up.
ReplyDeleteOver the years I have been many times to the Caribbean, mostly St. Martin. I could stay there all winter. As soon as I get off the plane, I can feel the toxicity of city life drift from my body. Grand Case is my fav spot there: a very scenic slice of the beach and many amazing restaurants. As well, the locals have rib shacks along the beach with yummy food and tonnes of drinks. Routine is simple: walk the beach, read, eat, drink, watch the ocean, drink, drink, eat, drink,...
ReplyDeleteGAH. Counting the days until my own Caribbean adventure!
ReplyDeleteGreat photos! Even the scabby one ;) I cannot wait to get down there. I just want to relax all week too. When we went to Aruba, it took us awhile to figure out how to relax! I think I would remember now!
ReplyDeleteI am happy you had a great time :)
okay, ouch! and oh man, you're lucky.
ReplyDeleteWelcome back! I would be jealous, but it is finally 70 degrees and sunny here, so it's like I have the Caribbean right in my backyard...
ReplyDeleteOK, it's really not like that at all. I'm still jealous. Glad you had such a lovely time!
If you posted pics of your scars to make me feel bad for you, maybe it would have worked better had they not been posted along with pics of paradise.
ReplyDeleteI really, really wish I had done that at some point (traveled alone)... x number of days all by myself on a beach with 3 books sounds like absolute HEAVEN.
ReplyDeleteGlad it was ;-)
I'm so glad that you have a nice time... I am inspired to plan our own carribean trip now, family-style, of course. But honey, your poor shoulder! Please take care of yourself and try not to maim yourself this week.
ReplyDeleteYay! I'm glad you had a good time! I miss the DR.
ReplyDeletealice, these photos are just lovely! i want to go to there!
ReplyDeleteThe pictures are fantastic, and I'm so glad you had a great time--- one day you can show your scar that even **he** had a good time on vacation when he was a wee bitty little scab.
