life in the 80s

and now, for a little contrast to monday's pictures of my high-falutin' highschool, i give you my grammar school. or, as it's affectionately referred to by my friends, farm school:
that's... it. that's the whole school. or it was when i went there, anyway. they've built it up a lot more of the property since i was wee. back in the day, though, the whole grade school was in that one building. each class had their own little farmhouse room, where we hunkered down all day long learning our lessons without grades, textbooks or tests. it was actually super fun.

the school did have a bunch of land, though, and several barns. this one, for example, is where we had woodworking class:
and this one still had a bunch of hay in it back from when the land was a working farm:there was a creek surrounding the property that we spent a lot of time playing in / on / around, and this tree - named Old Man's Tree, because it was.. you know.. old - was a favorite spot to go when it was too nice out to have, say, spelling class:
so! lest you think i come from a fancypantsed, uppercrust childhood, i assure you: HAHAHAHA no.

also: i've mentioned the
legwarmers here before, and.. uh.. they were in town again last weekend. i suggest you go here, then also perhaps here. YOU'RE WELCOME.

Whoa. woodworking in elementary school? no text books? What did you learn in there? It sounds kind of hippy-ish, but also way cool.

I wish I'd gone to that school. Though Hillary + woodworking = blood, so it's probably best that I didn't.

Ok, so I have been lax in my erading/commenting, so I guess I'll just e-mail you about Oliver... and I am dying to know: grammar school = farm school, high school = boarding school...? Did your family win the lottery just before your freshman year? Or was the boarding school (you can trust us, we'll still love you) like a fancy juvenile detention center? KIDDING! Of course! I think... ;)

WAIT!! TAKE MY COMMENT BACK!!! I meant "READING" - not "ERADING!" This is important, because I am pretty sure "erading" is something really bad and possibly illegal...

Now I understand where the term "Tree Hugger" comes from!

Did you get to reunite with the Little House on the Prarie gang?

In high school, I took WELDING. Yes, welding. Obvs, I am from a small town. Your farm school is ginormous by comparison

OK, now I have school envy! and...I so want to hug that tree, she look so old and sweet. where is that school? Oregon?

That school is seriously adorable. I went to a basic suburban brick structure, but the one-room schoolhouse deal is much more charming.

Ok, I'm jealous. I want to rewind and go to a school with no textbooks, grades or tests!

I seriously resent growing up in the city now. We didn't even have a single tree on our playground!

Whoa...did you get all Mary Catherine Gallagher on that tree?

First-time reader of your blog. Did you get a good look at that farm school?

The grass really is greener on the other side of the farm school fence.

You sure picked a big tree to hug:)

SnakeMaster is seriously jealous of your Farm School. Catching snakes instead of spelling? He's all there. And he thinks you had some cool parents to send you there. 'Cuz the ones he's got? Not that cool.

I wish I had gone to a grammar school like that!
