just one small voice, but I use it to shout

most of you will know by now that Susan G. Komen for the Cure has abruptly cut its funding for Planned Parenthood. komen claims this is not a politically-driven decision, but that stance is frankly a little hard to believe.

in what universe is cutting funding for cancer screenings a good idea for the charity that claims it wants to end breast cancer?

i've had conflicting feelings about komen for a while, due to its practice of suing other charities who use any variation of "for the cure" in their title or slogan (because copyrighting CANCER SLOGANS is so helpful for people suffering from cancer..??) but ultimately felt that if they were providing valuable research that could help my friends, i would continue to support them.

that stops now.

you can make your voice heard by donating directly to Planned Parenthood here.

  1. I feel the same way and have been blasting this all over my fb page. I'm going to donate directly to PP now. Any time/effort I spent doing their run last year will be donated in $$ directly to PP this year.

  2. I am near blind with rage over this turn of events and will be sending a big fat check to Planned Parenthood to whatever the hell they wish with. Geez, Komen, way to fight the noble cause...of trying to put Planned Parenthood out of business. I've thought for a while that the organization was slimy (the lawsuit you mention, the fact that the founder was a Bush appointee), but this is really low.

  3. Komen be DAMNED. I've made my donation to PP and will continue to do so. I hope they make SO MUCH MONEY off of this (PP I mean, NOT Komen).

  4. Wow, that's idiotic. I've raised a bunch of money for Komen, but I guess I'm going to have to find a charity that actually cares about doing things for others rather than their own glory.

  5. I knew about their ridiculous lawsuits, but this PP thing made me research them more, and I discovered some really scary things. As in, they aren't caving to right-wing pressure... they just ARE right-wing. It is SCARY.

  6. I like the way you think. My college sorority has strong ties to SGK. You better believe they will be getting a letter from me encouraging them to support other cancer curing charities.

  7. I still can't believe the lawsuit over "for the cure." Seriously. Pick your battles.

That said, I think this is going to hurt SGK's image far more than they anticipated.

  8. Gah, WHY do charities think that a negative act will result in anything positive? If they don't want to support PP, couldn't they have made this decision way, way back in the first place? Makes no sense to defund it NOW.

  9. AMEN!! I think (hope!) this is going to end coming back at them and kicking them in the ass. Their decision makes no sense at all, from the point of view of their supposed goals. They just lost all credibility with me.

  10. Love this. I made my PP donation yesterday!

  11. There are so many things about SGK that anger me. Over the past few years I've learned a lot about them. First of all, they make a shit ton of money. Almost none of it goes toward cancer research. Most of it goes toward making, promoting, selling, etc. all the bullshit pink "awareness" products that don't do a goddamn thing to help find a cure for cancer.

This whole Planned Parenthood thing just solidifies my dislike of SGK. Absolutely despicable.

  12. Nice! I won't be doing my regular 5K or fundraising for them....despite the news that they have softened their position today (PP can apply....they won't necessarily get funded though). The damage is done. I would rather support other organizations.

  13. If they were offended by PP, the SGK folks shouldn't have granted money that direction in the first place.

Politicizing health care makes me sick. PP does so much more than abortions. When I was a young, poor newlywed, they were the only place I could afford to go for "feminine" health care and birth control. At the time, I was rather "conservative" in viewpoint but that didn't stop me from going there; they didn't have a gatekeeper asking me my politics.

I have friends who have raised money with the big 3-day SGK events and I have not sponsored them because I was uncomfortable giving money to that organization. Something about everything being washed in pink and reading about lawsuits rubs me terribly wrong.

Politics has no place in the health care arena. Now if only the US Congress would realize that... *sigh*
