staying warm on tuesday

ok, so i know it's not nearly as cold here as it is in chicago. or, good lord, as cold as it is by kyla. but it HAS been awfully chilly around here (wind chills below zero!) and dude, i'm going to be spending MANY HOURS on tuesday just..... standing. in the outside, which is cold. so i've been stressing a bit as to how to stay most effectively warmish. here's what i came up with:

layer one. tank top, yoga pants, and wool socks:

layer two. add a turtleneck and jeans:

layer three. add a wool sweater and ginormous fluffy socks:

layer four. puffy coat (using a windbreaker as a liner) and hiking boots:

layer five. now we're just getting ridiculous:

so! hopefully this will be good enough. i saw some folks at the metro today who were wearing ski jackets and snow pants into the city, and.. well, frankly, that seemed like a FANTASTIC IDEA. but i have neither, so 27635 layers it is!

for the record, the insanity has definitely started around here. i wandered into the metro today around noon, and was halfway across the walkway over 66 when i came up short and, to the amusement of a few people nearby me, blurted out "OH my GOD...!!!" because the entire area between the fare machines and the turnstiles was absolutely JAMMED with people. i missed the first train that came into the station, because i couldn't make my way through the throng to approach the turnstiles in time. it was pretty crappy.

at least on tuesday i won't be taking public transportation, and i'm *expecting* the insanity. today was frustrating because i was trying to run errands and actually get from point a to point b in a reasonable amount of time, which HA HA HA no. although, when i stop and think about the fact that the reason i can't get around is because people from around the country are here to be a part of this inauguration.. well.. i stop being so crabby. we met some guys last night who had come all the way from alaska just to try to attend the speech on the mall on tuesday. that's pretty inspiring. i'm awfully happy to be here, overall.

  1. I'm jealous, but also glad I live in a climate which will never require me to wear 2 pairs of pants at once.

  2. Your enthusiasm ALMOST helped to tip me over the edge of sanity (for me) and into the throngs of people on Tuesday. If I were young and single, it would be a no-brainer. If my kids were older, it would be a no-brainer. Here I am, stuck in the middle so I'm staying out in the nether-reaches of NoVA and counting on you to post some AWESOME photos.

LC Transit is busing folks in for free to the Metro (East Falls Church, I think) on Tuesday. Be VERY glad you won't be riding in those crowds!

Stay Warm & Safe and have a WONDERFUL time!!

  3. Wow. I cant imagine the insanity in that area this week. Im thinking that you may not be warm enough, but layering is always the way to go. Lately around here it has been getting to about -30s with the wind chill so maybe Im just hyper-sensitive. Good luck!

  5. I would have subbed some tights or long underwear for the yoga pants (don't the yoga pants feel bulky and awkward under jeans?), but other than that, your outfit sounds like a good choice! I'm jealous that you get to witness all the excitement first hand. Have a fantastic time!

I like your covering up idea. I think it'll work!

  9. Have so much fun being part of history! I can't wait to hear your version.

Oh, and I second tights over yoga pants for ease of knee bending and lack of bulkiness.

  12. Well, if you can't purchase the wool-lined boots, ski pants and wind-resistant gloves before tomorrow, might I suggest a close second: a thermos full of something warm & alcoholic!

  14. How on earth did u manage to wear jeans ON TOP of yoga pants and not look like a heifer?

    What's your secret, huh?

BTW - loved this post, great idea and very amusing. I'll shut up about how cold I think it is here in Vancouver, Canada (ie not very, about 42F, though my car window was a bit icey this morning)

  15. Yeah, I could never wear jeans on top of yoga pants. That defies the properties of physics or something.

  16. I'm so envious of you actually being there today! I'll look for you on tv. :)

  18. I was going to do the same thing, that is, take photos of just how many layers I had to put on on Tuesday.

But you skipped the first layer.
