brief rant by a crazed harry potter fan

work is craaaazy right now (yay new job!) and i haven't been home before midnight any day this week sooooo i'm a little behind on the posting right now. so this will be just a quick one to say to all those folks out there who don't like harry potter: jesus, calm down already.

i get not wanting to read them, i get (in theory) not liking them even if you read them (ok that's a lie, i don't get that one. but i respect your choice to not like them! even if it is the wrong choice. kidding! sort of). what i don't get is why that means you become all snotty and high and mighty about refusing to read them, and talk shit about those of us who do enjoy the books. for the most part, these folks have never actually picked up a HP book, but they sneer down their noses at those of us lowly, weak-minded, easily-influenced-by-pop-culture-fads-individuals who allow a kids' book - a KIDS' BOOK, PEOPLE! as they like to remind us - to get our little panties in a bunch. how EVER could we be so nerdy as to show excitement when a book we've been waiting two years for - to complete a series some people have been following for a decade - is finally published? GOD, we are all so LAME.

here's my thing. i don't care if you don't read it. but if you haven't read it, you don't know if it's good or not. it's not some small subsection of the dungeon and dragons crowd who likes these books; it's millions of people of all ages from around the world. a lot of very, very smart people are big fans of these books. that the books have such a universal appeal should tell you something - like maybe, just maybe? they're pretty good. and even if you don't think so, you might respect the fact that a whole lot of other people do.

don't even get me started about the people who think it's sooooo hilarious to shout spoilers to all those nerds who get soooo upset to find out who in their precious little book dies! ha ha! what fun! i think those people must also have pulled the wings off of insects and tortured kittens growing up. it sure is hilarious to ruin other peoples' happiness!

in the end, it IS "just a book." the same way that red sox game you recorded is "just a game," so you won't mind if i tell you who won before you get to watch it, will you?

  1. I'm a little late getting back on the Alice train, but I'm here now and HAPPY AS HELL! Yay! You're back!

I agree totally about people who are mean spoily spoilers and those who look down their noses because HP couldn't POSSIBLY be LITERATURE. I will then ask them the name of their favorite t.v. show and proceed to tear it shreds. ESPECIALLY if it's CSI Miami.

In other long comment news, your kitten is beyond precious and I'm thrilled that you have a new wife!

  2. While I agree completely with your impassioned defense of all things Potter, might I also point out that Michael Bolton and Celine Dion sold millions of CDs.

But yes, the "spoiler" people are just idiots.

  3. Everyone is entitled to have things they enjoy. Whether or not I personally also enjoy them is irrelevent. I haven't read the Harry Potter books (and I'm not sure why I haven't. I have a strange disinterest in them.). But I respect the rights of everyone else to read them and enjoy them. I have several friends who adore the whole series. I don't understand why there's such a backlash against that series. If you don't read them, why pick on people who do? And shouting spoilers is heinous behavior. Those people should have been run off from the bookstore. I do think it's awesome that people were lining up all night for a *book*! Yay! Books and reading should be considered way more cool.

  4. Another amen. I read classic novels ... my favorite authors are Dickens and Dostoevsky ... so intelligence definitely not a factor in loving HP series.

  5. I finished the book last night. I liked it and at the same time I feel a sense of sadness that the series is over. Harry was truly an interesting story. I'll miss his adventures. I don't think people understand that a concept like this only comes about once in a lifetime. It's rare. Sure you can read about it, but I'm VERY picky about what I read. I gave up on Stephen King due to the violence. It just wasn't good. But Harry made me read 700 pages in 5 days. I doubt there are other people who will EVER get me to do that.

    I'll miss Harry ...
